Franklin’s multi-talented Mabins can run over or past opposing tacklers
Livonia Franklin senior Cordell Mabins has experienced success since the first day he stepped on a football field for the Livonia Junior Athletic League’s Livonia Orioles.
Engaging running back an important cog in Patriots’ 4-0 start
Equipped with an engaging smile and cool-but-confident personality, you’d undoubtedly enjoy meeting Livonia Franklin senior running back Cordell Mabins.
Everywhere, that is, except between the white lines of a football field.
Solidly built at 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, Mabins has the speed and muscle to run over or past opposing would-be tacklers.
A three-year starter for a program that perennially peaks during the post-season playoffs, Mabins cranks out 100-yard rushing games (and TDs) at the same rate the sun rises every morning.
His most-recent century-mark effort came during last week’s 35-13 victory over cross-town rival Livonia Churchill, lifting the state-ranked Patriots to 4-0 heading into Friday’s game against resurgent Westland John Glenn.
Mabins took a few minutes during a break in a recent Patriot practice to chat with SocialHouseNews.com Editor-In-Chief Ed Wright.
What was your first “I Love Football!” moment?
The first time I was ever on a football field, playing for the Livonia Orioles, the coach was calling out the veteran players who would be starting and he put me with that group on the defensive line right away.
Is there a play you remember most from your junior football days?
We were playing the Northville Colt in the the playoff. We were at our own 1-yard line and I was standing in my own end zone. The quarterback pitched me the ball and I ran it 99 yards. I never looked back (to see if anyone was gaining on him). I just kept going until I got to the end zone.
Does your number (23) have any significance?
Not really. I picked it when I was a sophomore and never changed.
If you were asked by your coaches to play offensive line, how do you think you’d do?
I’m a pretty strong guy, so I think I could pull it off. I like the position I’m playing now, though (he laughed).
What do you like about this year’s Livonia Franklin football team?
We all click together really well. Our chemistry is amazing. We all love playing together.
What’s your grade-point average and do you have a favorite subject.
It’s 3.0 and my favorite subject is ELA (English Language Arts).
Where do you want to be in 10 years?
Living big in a mansion.
What do you like about football practice?
Just being together with my teammates, learning to play football with my friends.
When you attend off-season prospect camps, do you get nervous?
Not really. I go there with high expectations and I just try to ball out. The best thing is meeting new friends and creating new relationships. The ones I’ve attended have gone really good so far.
