Senior LeBar the ‘center’ of attention for Churchill
Multi-season starter thrives at leading Chargers’ offensive line
When it comes to delivering perfectly-placed snaps out of the shotgun formation to Livonia Churchill quarterbacks or executing a difference-making block, Charger senior center Caleb LeBar follows the advice that was printed on the front of his black Nike T-shirt Wednesday afternoon: JUST DO IT!
LeBar has just done it at a consistent clip throughout his varsity football career, helping the Chargers to an 8-3 record in 2021. He is prepared to bolster the team’s chances of equaling or bettering that mark this fall.
A 3.1 student who also excels as a thrower in track & field (he advanced to the Division 1 regional meet and finished second in the Livonia City meet in the shot put in the spring, LeBar took a few minutes out of his two-a-days schedule Wednesday to chat with SocialHouseNews.com Editor-In-Chief Ed Wright.
What was your first “I love football!” moment?
Playing for the Livonia Orioles, just being able to hang out with my friends. That’s when I first started to love the game.
Was there a play you executed when you were younger that convinced you this might be the sport for you?
My freshman year when I got my first sack and a switch sort of flipped. I thought at that moment that, ‘Yeah, this is my sport. This is what I love doing’.
What do you like best about playing center?
I love that each play starts with my movement. I love that I get to handle the ball every play and start the action. I’ve been a center since I was in first grade.
Do you ever dream about playing wide receiver or running back?
I’ve always thought it would be fun to play wide receiver, catch a pass, take it to the end zone and hear the crowd roar.
What do you like about this year’s Churchill team?
The chemistry between us is really good. We’re a little younger team but our offensive line has three returning starters, which is a key for us. A lot of us have played together since we were young, which helped build our chemistry.
What’s your favorite class?
Probably marketing, but I like history and science as well.
What’s the best book you’ve read?
One called “Kid Owner” I read when I was young. It was about a kid football player who owned a team. That one meant a lot to me.
What’s the worst movie you’ve ever seen?
I don’t like some of the ‘Harry Potter’ movies. I’m just not that type of guy.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years?
I’d love a job in the football world, either as a coach or an athletic director. It’s been such a big part of my life my whole life.
What’s your favorite part of two-a-day practices?
I’m with my second family all day, my teammates. I love being around all my teammates and coaches. My brother is coaching this year, too, so I can see him all day.
